Florida State University Supports on-Campus Checkpoints

College students are often the heaviest of drinkers. With newfound freedom from parental authority and a fresh right to drink alcohol at 21-years-old, these young adults can end up in grave trouble. Sometimes, fraternity boys and sorority girls don’t know what their alcoholic limit is and consume too much too fast.

They may think that driving with a high blood-alcohol content is all right, but they are gravely wrong. Even on the college campus, it isn’t safe to drive with a BAC above 0.08 percent. For the young adults at college that aren’t yet 21, there is a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to DUIs. Any person under 21 that is caught drinking can be charged with a DUI if he or she even as 0.01 percent of alcohol in his or her system.

At FSU, the police department is vigilant in enforcing these statutes. The college has already had two checkpoints in the past month, and has made 36 arrests this year due to the checkpoints on campus. Many of them are underage drinking arrests or violations of open container laws. FSU always announces their DUI checkpoints before setting up, in order to give people fair warning that they are at risk to an arrest if they don’t abide by the law. The check-points, which are set up on campus, are normally most effective on Friday nights when the students are often out partying.

The FSU Police Major says that the force at the school wants to keep impaired drivers off the roads and keep streets safe. Ironically, fewer than half of the arrests on campus are students that attend the school. Many times the drivers are visitors that attended an on-campus party. If you have been charged with a DUI and were discovered at a DUI checkpoint, contact a Tampa DUI lawyer to help you out. We will work hard to fight for you and prove that you are innocent or deserve a lesser sentence.
