How Can You Tell If You Are Legally Drunk?

There are numerous charts and calculators out there, which can supposedly tell you if it is safe to get behind the wheel or not. However, none of these are guarantees. It can be very dangerous to ask: how many drinks does it take to get drunk?

It does not matter if you feel drunk or not: the government has set the limit for legal blood alcohol concentration at 0.08%. And there are many ways to exceed that amount. For instance, it can take just one drink to set someone dangerously close to the limit, depending on their height and weight. Combine this with medication, and/or with an empty stomach, and someone could easily be found with an illegal BAC. Body fat percentage, medication conditions, and various other characteristics can all skew a DUI test, landing you with a charge of driving under the influence, even in you don't feel drunk.

Is there a safe amount to drink before driving? Not really. Your safest bet is to not mix drinking and driving at all, even if it is only one drink. The bottom line is, just because you're under a certain amount of drinks, it is not safe to assume that you are legally sober. If you get behind the wheel after drinking, not only could you be putting you and others' safety at risk, but you can be putting your future in jeopardy.

Even a first DUI charge could lead to these and other penalties:

  • Jail for up to 6 or 9 months
  • A $250 to $1,000 fine
  • Six months to 1 year of a suspended driver's license
  • Ten days of vehicle impoundment
  • 50 hours of community service
  • Probation for one year
