Tampa Firefighter Charged with DUI, Suspended

Saturday, July 19, a firefighter was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Pasco County, reports The Tampa Tribune. Tampa Fire Rescue has announced that the 39-year-old man will face suspension while the case is pending. This man has worked with Tampa Fire Rescue for nearly a decade, and he was off-duty when the arrested occurred.

When the deputy pulled the man over, he is reported as mentioning that he had a prior DUI conviction. He refused to take a breath test. The suspect was also said to have failed field sobriety testing. The arresting officer further noted eight alcoholic beverages in the car, most of them downed already and in the backseat, one an open container in the front of the car.

This arrest is his third, with one DUI arrest taking place in Hillsborough County in 2001, and another DUI arrest in 2012, an arrest that would turn into a conviction. When it comes to facing a second DUI charge within a five-year span, the penalties can be heightened, even doubled from a first-time DUI conviction.

These penalties can include:

  • Up to 9 or 12 months in prison
  • Up to a $2,000 fine
  • At least 5 years' driver's license suspension
  • DUI school
  • 50 hours' community service
  • 30 days' vehicle impoundment

All it takes is one arrest, whether valid or not, and one's entire career can be jeopardized. If a formal DUI charge turns into a conviction, this can permanently derail a career, limit housing options, and more. As for refusing a DUI test, this could automatically cause you to forfeit your license for a full year, regardless of whether or not you are ever convicted.

When you face such serious penalties, you need serious defense. Learn how our Tampa DUI attorneys can provide the fierce advocacy you deserve you when you call Thomas & Paulk, P.A.
