Florida Middle School Teacher Aide Arrested for DUI

Saturday, February 22, a teacher at Paul R. Smith Middle School aide was arrested for DUI after a deputy pulled her over. The reason for the stop was that the 49-year-old was said to be driving at 69 miles per hour in a 55 mile-per-hour stretch of road with a malfunctioning headlight. According to the Tampa Bay Times, when the deputy approached her, she smelled of alcohol. She is also reported to have said that she had had "several drinks" at the St. Petersburg bar that she had just left.

No surprise, the deputy asked her to perform field sobriety tests. What was surprising, however, is that when the teacher stepped out of the car, she wasn't wearing anything below her waist. The police report says that the deputy had to ask the teacher two times to put her pants back on. She was soon arrested for a DUI, and her blood test results showed a blood alcohol content of 0.135 to 0.137.

As she faces a misdemeanor DUI charge, her job may not be in jeopardy, but a conviction could change matters. If someone finds him or herself convicted of a DUI, then this would result in a criminal record that is available to the public. Not only could a sentence of incarceration threaten any current livelihood, but a criminal record could destroy one's future job prospects. This damage to one's reputation could alter one's future in innumerable respects.

For a DUI charge to hold up, however, there has to have been a valid reason that you were pulled over, a valid reason to suspect that you were under the influence, and a valid reason for the arrest. Even failed DUI tests can be defended against. Remember that you have the right to remain silent, and be sure to use your right to an attorney as soon as possible.
