Fatal Crash Blamed on DUI Repeat Offender

Recently in Myrtle Beach, Florida, a 25-year-old man was charged with driving under the influence and then starting a crash that killed a 27-year-old man. Once the police investigated his record, they discovered that the offender had been to traffic school twice before and was previously arrested for a DUI. As well, he was arrested for 18 other traffic offenses in the state of Florida, and was considered a high risk driver.

That’s why it should have been no surprise that Jared McRae Mahler was drinking and driving on Tuesday afternoon when he hit Jacob Young’s vehicle and effectively killed the young man. An autopsy performed on Tuesday morning shows that Young died from the trauma that he received at the crash. It is not clear if he was wearing a seatbelt because by the time that the police arrived he had already been pulled from the car by a witness who had rushed to his aid.

Mahler was charged with a felony DUI in connection with the incident. Young’s vehicle was totaled and spun into the gap in a tree at the time of the accident. The vehicles were both going south on Kings Highway when the accident occurred. Mahler was booked in a local jail after the incident where he was held on a $50,000 bond. Since 2005, he had been charged with 19 traffic violations. He was also charged in 2007 with trespassing on school grounds and resisting arrest. In 2005, the high risk offender was charged with a bicycle regulation, two seatbelt violations, and speeding offenses.

He has also needs to be cited for driving with unsafe equipment, and had previous DUIs on his record. He has paid his share of fines and fees, attended traffic schools, and served community service for his various sentences. Now, he may be incarcerated for a tragic DUI manslaughter. If you have been accused of DUI manslaughter, then you are going to want an accomplished attorney on your side. Contact a lawyer at Thomas & Paulk today for more information!
