St. Petersburg Woman Charged with DUI After Crash with School Bus

On December 3, a 31-year-old mother crashed into a school bus, according to police officers in St. Petersburg, Florida. After the accident, she faced charges of driving under the influence. Officials said that she had her 3-year-old son with her in the car that afternoon when she rear-ended a school bus. Three students were on the bus at the time of the accident, but no one was reported injured. The woman was charged with careless driving, a DUI, and refusing to submit to a blood alcohol test. Her bail was set at $5,250.

As complex and serious as any DUI charge is, certain circumstances can escalate both the difficulty of the case as well as the potential penalties faced. One such complicating factor is being slapped with a DUI charge with a minor in the car. For example, a first time DUI charge could entail the potential penalty of $500 to $1,000 in fines, plus up to 6 months in jail. But with a minor in the vehicle (or a BAC of at least 0.15), even someone convicted of their very first DUI could face $1,000 to $2,000 in fines, and up to 9 months in prison. And in either case of conviction, the defendant would lose their driver's license for up to one year. In fact, because of implied consent law, a driver could automatically lose their driver's license just for refusing a blood or breath test. This refusal can further be used by a prosecutor as incriminating evidence.

Whether the charge is for a first DUI or for a repeat DUI, the charge will be a severe and complicated one. If you have been charged with a DUI in Tampa, then you need to know that you have a legal advocate on your side who is thoroughly experienced in getting charges reduced or dismissed. No matter how complex the DUI charge you face, you can find the rigorous defense you need at Thomas & Paulk, P.A.
