Tampa Woman Charged with DUI After Crashing into Gas Pump on Christmas Eve

On Thursday, December 26, a Tampa woman found herself facing a DUI charge for a car crash at a gas station that occurred on Christmas Eve. The 26-year-old woman had been stopping for gas on her way to see her boyfriend in Gainesville, when she crashed into a gas pump, resulting in some damage to the pump, but no injuries. When police arrived, an officer reported that he smelled alcohol on her breath, and that she had trouble keeping her balance. Officers also said that they noticed a half-emptied vodka bottle in the truck bed. When asked, the woman performed and failed a field sobriety test. She was arrested and took a breath test. The result: a .399 breath alcohol content. That is almost five times above the legal limit in Florida. She admitted that not only had she been drinking earlier, but that she had not eaten anything all that day. "I just made a very bad mistake", she said.

Unfortunately, that mistake could mean up to six months in jail, or with a BAC higher than .20, possibly up to a 9-month sentence. Fines could be as high as $1,000, and driver's license suspension would last for at least 6 months, if not a full year. If someone is charged with a DUI and was said to have a BAC of more than .20, then they could be ordered to install an ignition interlock device for 6 months. There could also be 50 hours of community service and a year of probation added to a sentence for a first time DUI. As serious as all this is, the worst part of a DUI conviction is the permanent criminal record that comes with it, a record that would follow someone into every job interview and come up in every housing application. A DUI charge threatens more than your freedom for several months; it threatens your reputation and future prospects as well.

While it is only natural to enjoy some drinks around the holidays, it is always worth it to drink responsibly. It is never worth it to drive after drinking. That being said, we understand that a DUI charge can come at any time of the year. Whenever you find yourself faced with these charges and their serious penalties, you need to find the best Tampa DUI lawyer you can, someone who is dedicated to fighting for your every legal right, someone who has an excellent track record of defending clients.
