Pasco Fire Captain Accused of DUI

It's one thing to get arrested for a DUI as an average Joe, it is another thing entirely when you are a public figure in your community; a fire captain, for example. According to news reports, a Pasco fire captain was arrested last week for driving under the influence of alcohol and was required to spend a day behind bars and pay a $1,000 fine for his actions. The Indiana court deemed him as guilty and now the word on the street is that there is a very high possibility he will lose his job for his actions. D. Garofalo, 36, is said to have been driving down the road under the influence in early May and flipped his car into a ditch. It is also stated that this DUI arrest occurred only 17 days after his wife had filed for a divorce.

E. Jacobs, his alleged girlfriend, was with him the day of the accident and claims that they were in the town of North Port City to attend his grandmother's funeral. Jacobs states that they had been drinking a t a bar that day and were arguing, and then they left in his car. She noticed his drunken state and get out of the car when they were stopped at a traffic light. Jacobs reports that as she was walking away it wasn't long after that her boyfriend's car flipped and landed in the nearby ditch. Garofalo was honest with the officers at the time of his arrest and admitted to consuming at least 5 beers at the bar before getting behind the wheel of his car.

The arresting police officer reports that when conducting the field sobriety tests that he did so poorly that the officer had to stop early because he was afraid for the man's safety. According to local newspaper, Garofalo claims that he realizes he is not a perfect person, and he is hoping to be able to move past this event. Due to his position as a fire captain, his job is in grave jeopardy. The Florida statute claims that no person who has been convicted of a DUI is legal to drive an ambulance for the next three years, and as a fire fighter, every person must be able to in the event of an emergency; no exceptions. Since his arrest in May, he has been on desk duty at the fire department, and the Pasco Fire Rescue assistant chief, Cynthia Holland claims that they will determine what measures will be taken next regarding his job.
