Ocala Mother Arrested for Suspected DUI with Toddler in Car

Monday, April 28, just after midnight, a 26-year-old woman was taken into custody and brought to Marion County Jail on DUI charges. The alleged drunk driver was said to have her 2-year-old child in the car at the time she was stopped by police. According to an officer's report, the woman almost collided with a concreted median, as she was veering in and out of lanes. While conducting a traffic stop, the officer noted that the mother was severely imbalanced, with the heavy smell of alcohol on her. The officer further said that the woman had said she'd downed mixed vodka before taking to the road. She failed a field sobriety test. She has been charged with an alcohol DUI with a person under 18. Her child is in currently in the custody of a grandmother.

As serious as any DUI charge is, when this formal accusation includes the charge of endangering a minor, this automatically escalates the penalties a person can face, even if this is their first DUI charge. Enhanced penalties can mean $500 to $1500 more than the typical DUI fine, and 3 months more than the usual sentence of incarceration for a DUI, in all carrying the potential for $2,000 in fines and 9 months in jail. And that just for a first-time DUI conviction. These enhanced penalties can also be leveled against someone whose DUI tests showed a 0.15 percent BAC (blood alcohol content) or higher.

Whatever the exact charge and the specific penalties, a DUI conviction will always mean the burden, often a life-long burden, of a criminal record. This is a record that can get in the way of a good job, decent housing, and other opportunities in life. If you have been charged with driving under the influence in Tampa, do not hesitate to reach the legal team at Thomas & Paulk, P.A. immediately.
