In Deadly Crash, Woman Arrested on Charge of Driving Under the Influence of Meth

Months after sustaining severe injuries in a single-car accident, a Southport woman was arrested on DUI and DUI manslaughter charges on Wednesday, February 12. Back in June of last year, the 25-year-old suspect was said to have crashed into a tree, sustaining critical injuries, while her 27-year-old passenger was killed from the impact. According to a blood test, the driver had been under the influence of both methamphetamine and amphetamine when she struck the tree. She was charged with being a habitual offender when it came to driving on a suspended license, and she was also charged with driving on a suspended license in a crash that involved serious bodily injury. Her bail was set at $35,000.

While many DUI charges are charged as misdemeanors, if someone was killed in an alleged DUI accident, then the suspect will be charged with vehicular manslaughter, a charge also known as vehicular homicide. This second-degree felony could lead to $10,000 in fines and 15 years in prison. Furthermore, if a defendant was charged with also leaving the scene (causing a fatal hit-and-run accident), then this first-degree felony charge could mean up to a 30-year prison sentence. There would likely be additional penalties as well, not least of which would be the permanent record of the conviction, a criminal record visible to the public, including to potential employers, landlords, lenders, and more.

If you or someone you know faces any such serious charges, then you could be in a race against the clock to preserve not only your freedom, but your entire future.
