Wrong-Way Driver Arrested for Second Tampa DUI

Near 3:00 a.m., officers from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrested a 65-year-old man for allegedly driving under the influence. About an hour earlier, drivers had called in to report a driver going north on the southbound I-275, swerving in and out of lanes. An officer tracked the driver down and pulled him over, at which point the deputy reported detecting alcohol when the driver spoke, and with slurred words at that. The suspect allegedly had red, glassy eyes.

The man is said to have flunked multiple field sobriety tests, and blood-alcohol tests turned in results of .268 and .252. That is more than three times the legal limit. As of last news report, the man was booked the Hillsborough County jail, on $1,000 bond.

There's even more bad news for this driver: he has a prior record. Back in 2008, he was convicted of drunk driving in Tampa, even though he refused to take any DUI tests. He lost his driver's license for a whole year. Just a year later, he was convicted of driving in spite of a suspended license. He went to DUI school as part of his sentence.

Even though there was no accident, much less injuries, a second DUI could mean up to:

  • 12 months in jail
  • A $2,000 fine
  • 1 to 2 years with an ignition interlock device
  • 50 hours of community service

As this was within five years of a DUI conviction, a second conviction would also mean a mandatory 5 years of driver's license suspension.

If you are ever faced with such steep penalties, you need to know your rights more than ever. And you also need a legal professional on your side who is dedicated to defending those rights.
