Police: Woman Arrested at Scene of Car Crash After She Assaulted Firefighter-Paramedic and Said She Had Been Drinking

Monday, March 31, a young woman from Palm Harbor was charged with attacking a firefighter-paramedic, and she could also face a DUI charge after having submitted to a blood test after she was arrested at the scene of a car accident. Clearwater police report that the 21-year-old crashed shortly before midnight yesterday. The accident was said to only be minor, and there were no other vehicles involved. Allegedly, the crash was preceded by the woman plowing through street signs before she struck a pole, creating a minor power outage after a power line tumbled over.

When police arrived at the scene, they reported that the smell of alcohol was coming off the suspect, and that she even went so far as to say that yes, she had been drinking. She agreed to have a blood test taken. Then she is said to have seized the paramedics arm and to flail her arms to hit him while she shouted, "You don't know what I have been through." She was arrested and charged with battery on a firefighter. A DUI charge is waiting on the results of her blood test.

A battery charge is often a first degree misdemeanor, which could lead to a one-year jail sentence and a $1,000 fine. As the charge involves a firefighter, however, a conviction could mean an aggravated sentence. A DUI charge would be almost as serious, and could have even more extensive penalties. For instance, on top of a 6-month jail sentence and $1,000 fine, a DUI conviction could mean:

  • A year with a suspended driver's license,
  • Vehicle impoundment for 10 days,
  • 50 hours of community service, and
  • Probation for 1 year.

That's just for a first-time DUI charge.
