How to Dress Appropriately For a DUI Court Case

While lawyers may spend a significant amount of time in the courtroom, they don't control an individual's impression on the jury or judge in most cases. As most people accused of DUI have never been in court before, they can often be underprepared on how to act. Your first impression on a judge or jury can go a long way in your case, which means how you dress and behavior is often more important than the testimony you or another gives.

The Do's & Don'ts of Courtroom Attire

With all of the stresses that accompany being involved in a DUI case, appearing in court can seem to be the most daunting aspect. The courtroom appearance of the defendant can sway a judge to believe their case or in turn result in a much harsher sentence.

When asked to appear in court, a defendant should take care by:

  • Donning neat and professional attire
  • Dressing conservatively and in presentable clothing
  • Avoiding bright, loud colors or all black
  • Keeping footwear simple and appropriate
  • Removing all jewelry besides a watch, wedding ring, or simple earrings
  • Steering away from tee shirts, sports attire, or clothing with vulgarity on it
  • Concealing any visible tattoos
  • Being clean, well-shorn, and visibly pulled together
  • Avoiding strong and pungent colognes or perfumes

Just as in any scenario, the defendant may be judged by the court before they open their mouth. By giving the judge nothing to focus on other than the value of their words and the quality of their legal defense, the defendant has a much better chance of securing a favorable outcome.

If you are preparing to appear before a court, make sure that you give yourself the best possible chance of success. Contact Thomas & Paulk to get started today!
